If it\u2019s a success, it\u2019ll be called UberAir.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers are focused on rotor technology, which means the cars won\u2019t look like those from \u201cBack to the Future\u201d \u2013 think cars that look more like helicopters and drones instead.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[Uber] doesn\u2019t build cars. They don\u2019t build aviation platforms,\u201d said Elias Rigas, chief of the Vehicle Applied Research Division at ARL\u2019s Vehicle Technology Directorate. \u201cBut the Army develops technologies for both of those spaces. \u2026 That\u2019s why they came to us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Uber wants to make flying cars that are quiet enough to use in an urban environment so they don\u2019t disturb other citizens. The Army\u2019s interested in working on quiet rotor technology for a few reasons, like making unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) stealthier.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cWe\u2019re looking at a next-generation unmanned aerial system that\u2019s able to operate quietly in theater to give the soldier an advantage in how they operate, particularly in close combat,\u201d explained Jaret Riddick, the director of the ARL Vehicle Technology Directorate.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"youtube-player\" width=\"696\" height=\"392\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/v0SQKq2hPXw?version=3&#038;rel=1&#038;showsearch=0&#038;showinfo=1&#038;iv_load_policy=1&#038;fs=1&#038;hl=en-US&#038;autohide=2&#038;wmode=transparent\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" style=\"border:0;\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups allow-presentation allow-popups-to-escape-sandbox\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Future vertical lift, which can make flights runway-independent and less of a logistics burden, is one of six modernization priorities announced by the Army in 2016, so really, the partnership is a win-win.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re able to use that industry partnership to quickly transition the outcomes into an atmosphere where they can be developed into products and make it into the hands of a soldier,\u201d Riddick said.<\/p>\n<p>The University of Texas, Austin, is also involved in the partnership, which means its research partners and those from Uber can access ARL\u2019s state-of-the-art facilities, which in turn helps them better understand the military\u2019s challenges.<\/p>\n<p>Like noise reduction, for example. It\u2019s actually really important for military unmanned aerial vehicles operations.<\/p>\n<p>Simply put, if you can\u2019t hear the vehicle, it can\u2019t be easily detected.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe really want to make them quiet so our operational zone of these vehicles can be increased \u2026 without being identified,\u201d said Rajneesh Singh, an ARL aerospace research scientist. \u201cIt has a direct impact on the survivability of these vehicles and accents the kinds of missions that these UAVs can perform.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The UAVs the military has now are good. They just need to be better.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThese things need to last longer, go further, go faster, and they need to be significantly more reliable than they are now,\u201d Rigas said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>So what\u2019s Uber bringing to the table? It\u2019s providing resources like facilities and hardware needed to conduct tests in the field.
