Ripe.io<\/a> wants to use blockchain technology to transform the food industry, and it just received a major influx of cash to do it. The agritech startup\u00a0just secured $2.4 million in financing from investors like Maersk Growth, the capital venture arm of the Danish shipping container conglomerate Maersk<\/a>, and Relish Works<\/a>, a Chicago-based food innovation hub.<\/p>\n

Cofounder and president of Ripe.io Phil Harris has high hopes for\u00a0this newly secured\u00a0round of financing: \u201c[it] takes a little company and enables [us to realize all of] our big ambitions.\u201d<\/p>\n

Both Harris and his cofounder and CEO Raja Ramachandran came to the food industry\u00a0from the financial world \u2014 Harris from Nasdaq and Ramachandram\u00a0from an industry consortium called R3CEV \u2014 before\u00a0coming together to\u00a0form Ripe Technology, Inc. or, as it\u2019s\u00a0come to be known, Ripe.io.<\/p>\n

\u201cOne of the things we saw early on was that blockchain could [be applied] beyond [the] financial [industry],\u201d says Ramachandran of\u00a0the company\u2019s early beginnings.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0two decided on food because they saw an\u00a0industry\u00a0plagued by\u00a0a number of problems, including \u201cfood fraud, food safety, [how to determine] what constitutes quality, and even things like spoilage management.\u201d Plus, food, of course, is personal. Explains Ramachandran, \u201c[it gave us the opportunity] to look at something that affects us daily, not only ourselves, [but] our families [and] our communities.\u201d<\/p>\n

Blockchain technology<\/a> isn\u2019t new. Created in 2008 by\u00a0the pseudonymous\u00a0inventor of Bitcoin, Satoshi Nakamoto, blockchain technology\u00a0served (and still serves) as an immutable digital ledger for the cryptocurrency, Bitcoin. It works by verifying transactions through a consensus of computer systems. Blockchain is the underlying technology\u00a0that makes Bitcoin a \u201ctrustless<\/a>\u201d and transparent cryptocurrency network.<\/p>\n

Savvy\u00a0observers soon realized that blockchain could be used in all sorts of different industries, including finance, real estate and, it turns out, the food industry. One of Ripe.io\u2019s first forays into food was with the\u00a0Internet of Tomatoes<\/a>, a collaborative project\u00a0of Analog Devices and the fast-casual salad franchise Sweetgreen.<\/p>\n

With\u00a0the Internet of Tomatoes, Ripe.io\u00a0set out to use blockchain technology to compile a wealth of data from the farm and apply it to growing a better tomato.\u00a0Using farmers and sensor machines, the project collected\u00a0information on everything from temperature to humidity, down to the chemistry reading of a tomato.<\/p>\n

It turns out what consumers might think of as a relatively simple food, the tomato, can generate a whole lot of information, with what Ramachandran describes as \u201chundreds and hundreds of data elements that comprise why a tomato turns out the way it does.\u201d<\/p>\n

It\u2019s not just the data, of course. In the food industry,\u00a0many food suppliers and producers have internal mechanisms to verify quality, taste and food safety, but what they don\u2019t\u00a0necessarily have is a way to share that information with the rest of their supply chain. As Harris explains:<\/p>\n

You have the labs, the distributors, the certification, the food safety, the restaurants…our observation was that they weren\u2019t really connected in any meaningful way [because] the data wasn\u2019t being shared [and there was] very little collaboration.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

According to Harris, the food industry\u00a0hasn’t gone through a meaningful\u00a0\u201cdigitization event, \u201d the kind of technological development that entirely transforms an industry. Take, for example, the shift that ultimately enabled consumers\u00a0to be able to buy a piece of stock in seconds on\u00a0their\u00a0smartphone. Harris says you can see it in a number of industries:<\/p>\n

[It\u2019s] what the internet has done around information-sharing \u2014 what we\u2019ve seen companies like Apple, Amazon, Netflix, Spotify and Pandora do for music, books and television. [Digitization takes] interaction with consumers to another level.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Blockchain technology\u00a0could potentially be used to create a whole new level of transparency in the food system. \u201cThe data [that\u2019s now] stuck in all the different silos throughout the [food] supply chain [can be brought] together into this magical object that we\u2019ve designed called a food bundle,\u201d\u00a0explains Harris.<\/p>\n

That \u201cfood bundle\u201d \u2014 or bundle of food-related data \u2014 can then be shared with\u00a0all of the\u00a0participants in the blockchain, which could be a\u00a0cattle rancher\u00a0in Texas or\u00a0a beef buyer\u00a0for\u00a0Walmart. \u201cIf you\u2019re able to get participation and collaboration from all the farmers, distributors, the people who play a part in all this,\u201d Ramachandran explains, \u201c[you\u2019ll] have better ways to showcase that food.\u201d<\/p>\n

With partners like Maersk now on board, Ripe.io is looking to take\u00a0their\u00a0\u201cblockchain of food\u201d\u00a0global. Unlike financial services, says Harris, \u201cfood doesn\u2019t have a center of gravity.\u201d Ripe.io\u00a0hopes blockchain can serve\u00a0companies throughout\u00a0the food system. \u201cWe\u2019ve designed…Ripe.io and its platform, the\u00a0\u201cblockchain of food,\u201d\u00a0to serve the entire food industry, says Harris.\u00a0\u201cFrom farm to fork, to the ingredients companies [like] meat, fish, dairy, pork, fruits and vegetables.\u201d<\/p>\n

The potential within the food system seems limitless.\u00a0In\u00a0this Millennial-obsessed\u00a0marketing age, the most obvious application is\u00a0increased transparency for consumers, of course, as blockchain offers food\u00a0producers a way to\u00a0go beyond\u00a0food labels\u00a0like\u00a0\u201csustainable\u201d or\u00a0\u201cnatural\u201d\u00a0and provide a whole new level of detail about the food they\u2019re about to purchase.<\/p>\n

But\u00a0the technology\u00a0can be used to increase collaboration\u00a0within\u00a0the food system itself, too. Explains Ramachandran,\u201ca\u00a0lot of the information[-sharing takes place] within the walls of trucks, warehouses [and] refrigeration units.\u201d\u00a0And Ramachandran was\u00a0surprised\u00a0by how eager\u00a0food producers\u00a0were to share information.\u00a0\u201cThese companies [you might think] would want to keep those doors sort of closed, it\u2019s actually quite the opposite.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
