{"id":2710,"date":"2018-08-03T15:30:56","date_gmt":"2018-08-03T15:30:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/athis-consulting.com\/news\/?p=2710"},"modified":"2018-09-14T19:24:04","modified_gmt":"2018-09-14T19:24:04","slug":"china-just-tested-a-hypersonic-weapon-that-could-launch-nukes-at-6-times-the-speed-of-sound","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/athis-technologies.com\/news\/innovation\/manufacturing\/2018\/china-just-tested-a-hypersonic-weapon-that-could-launch-nukes-at-6-times-the-speed-of-sound\/","title":{"rendered":"China Just Tested a Hypersonic Weapon That Could Launch Nukes at 6 Times the Speed of Sound"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>China successfully tested a hypersonic aircraft on Friday (Aug. 3), one that could one day be capable of firing nuclear missiles around the planet at up to six times\u00a0the speed of sound, according to China&#8217;s state-run news site\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.chinadaily.com.cn\/a\/201808\/06\/WS5b6787b4a3100d951b8c8ae6.html\">China Daily<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The aircraft, known as Starry Sky-2, is reportedly capable of screaming across the sky at speeds of up to 4,563 mph (7,344 km\/h) and rapidly switching direction mid-flight, China Daily reported, potentially allowing the rocket to blast right past existing missile defense systems.<\/p>\n<p>Video of the Starry Sky-2 test launch\u00a0(which was conducted in an undisclosed location in northwestern China) showed the aircraft being launched into space on a multistage rocket. The aircraft then separated from its launcher and continued flying on its own power, soaring at about Mach-5.5 (five and a half times the speed of sound) for 400 seconds, China Daily reported. The aircraft then performed several maneuvers at an altitude of about 18 miles (29 km) before landing in a designated target zone \u2014 a demonstration that witnesses heralded as a &#8220;huge success,&#8221; according to a statement quoted in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/news\/china\/diplomacy-defence\/article\/2158524\/chinas-hypersonic-aircraft-starry-sky-2-could-be-used\">South China Morning Post<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"in-article-1\" data-google-query-id=\"CK-z15Kl4NwCFUkL4Aodj9MAsg\"><\/div>\n<p>Starry Sky-2, which is being developed by the China Academy of Aerospace Aerodynamics in Beijing, is an example of a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/51388-hypersonic-jet-could-fly-mach-5.html\">&#8220;waverider&#8221; vehicle<\/a>. As the name suggests, waveriders are sleek, arrow-shaped planes built to glide along the\u00a0pressure waves\u00a0created by their own supersonic lift \u2014 essentially allowing the aircraft to surf on shockwaves. Waveriders are thus able to maintain impressive hypersonic speeds (speeds of Mach 5 or above) while making rapid, midair changes in trajectory \u2014 making them particularly difficult for current\u00a0missile defense systems to thwart.<\/p>\n<p>While the technology is still likely years away from being ready for use in a combat setting, Chinese military expert Song Zhongping\u00a0told\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.globaltimes.cn\/content\/1113980.shtml\">China&#8217;s\u00a0Global Times<\/a>\u00a0that the successful test puts China &#8220;shoulder to shoulder&#8221; with the U.S. and Russia in the development of hypersonic striking systems.<\/p>\n<p>Russian President Vladimir Putin announced in March that his country&#8217;s military was hard at work on\u00a0a hypersonic weapon code-named Avangard, which he claimed was capable of reaching\u00a0speeds of Mach 20\u00a0and could be ready for deployment as soon as 2020.<\/p>\n<p>The U.S., meanwhile, is also eagerly developing its own hypersonic weaponry, including a hypersonic missile capable of being launched from a warplane.
