{"id":1300,"date":"2017-01-16T18:25:34","date_gmt":"2017-01-16T18:25:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/athis-consulting.com\/news\/?p=1300"},"modified":"2018-08-30T14:40:51","modified_gmt":"2018-08-30T14:40:51","slug":"uk-wave-power-far-too-costly-warns-energy-research-body","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/athis-technologies.com\/news\/innovation\/green-renewable\/2017\/uk-wave-power-far-too-costly-warns-energy-research-body\/","title":{"rendered":"UK wave power far too costly, warns energy research body"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Wave power devices being tested in Cornwall and at Orkney are 10 times more expensive than other sources of low carbon power and need a radical rethink, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eti.co.uk\/news\/eti-sets-out-priorities-for-marine-energy-if-it-is-to-compete-with-other-low-carbon-sources\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">the Energy Technologies Institute (ETI) said<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The energy research body added that even if costs were cut aggressively, wave power would be unlikely to make a significant contribution to the UK\u2019s energy demands in coming decades.<\/p>\n<p>The institute, which has a mission to accelerate low carbon technologies, said the UK\u2019s marine energy strategy should instead prioritise support for tidal stream power, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/uk-news\/2016\/sep\/12\/worlds-first-large-scale-tidal-energy-farm-launches-scotland\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">a project being tested in the Pentland Firth<\/a>, which resembles underwater wind turbines. The ETI urged the government to agree a subsidy deal for Atlantis Resource\u2019s MeyGen scheme, which is the world\u2019s first large-scale tidal power project.<\/p>\n<p>Atlantis Resources hopes to ultimately expand the tidal array\u2019s first four turbines to 269, which would generate even more power than the Swansea bay tidal lagoon <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2017\/jan\/12\/tidal-lagoons-could-ensure-uk-power-supplies\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">backed by an independent review last week<\/a>. Such lagoon projects are further advanced than wave energy projects but some way behind tidal stream power development, and require large levels of investment, the ETI said.<\/p>\n<p>Experts have previously described the UK\u2019s wave power potential as huge and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2012\/oct\/17\/cornwall-scotland-uk-wave-power\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">said it could generate a tenth of electricity needs. <\/a><\/p>\n<p>But despite being <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2011\/sep\/27\/wave-and-tidal-power-alex-salmond\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">heralded six years ago by Scotland\u2019s then first minister Alex Salmond as on the verge of commercial deployment<\/a>, the fledgling sector has been dogged by delays and bankruptcies, such as the collapse of Scotland\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-scotland-scotland-business-30151276\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Pelamis Wave Power<\/a> in 2014 and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-scotland-scotland-business-34659324\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Aquamarine Power<\/a> in 2015.<\/p>\n<p>The ETI, which is funded by government and companies including Rolls-Royce, EDF and BP, called for a \u201cradical rethink\u201d if the technology is to provide affordable renewable electricity.<\/p>\n<p>Developers, which include Australia\u2019s Carnegie Clean <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/energy\" data-link-name=\"auto-linked-tag\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">Energy<\/a>, Finland\u2019s Fortum and the UK\u2019s Seatricity, need to reconsider their approaches to \u201cdrastically\u201d cut costs, the ETI said. Grid connections were another concern, it added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn wave energy our view is that even with aggressive cost reduction and innovation activities, current attenuator wave energy technologies are highly unlikely to meet the ETI\/UK Energy Research Centre marine energy roadmap targets, and are therefore unlikely to make a significant contribution to the UK energy system in the coming decades,\u201d a spokesman said.<\/p>\n<p>However, people in the industry disputed the analysis, saying they would not be testing and developing the technology if they thought it was not commercially viable.<\/p>\n<p>Andy Bristow, managing director at Seatricitysaid it was \u201cnonsense\u201d to suggest wave power was 10 times as expensive as the alternatives.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re confident in our technology but we\u2019re less confident in the UK government\u2019s commitment to renewables. We\u2019re finding it difficult at the moment because of a malaise that seems to have infected the marine renewables sector,\u201d Bristow said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe think it\u2019s a shame, because ultimately it\u2019s a no-brainer: it\u2019s clean, it\u2019s green, it has potential to be very cost effective.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bristow added that he was surprised the ETI had not consulted the company.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement, Fortum said: \u201cWave power is still under research, development and piloting phase throughout the world compared to for example solar and wind technologies which are rapidly maturing and becoming more market-based. It is important to understand that the development of new competitive energy technologies takes time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tim Sawyer, CEO of Carnegie, said he believed the report was based on out of date data.<\/p>\n<p>RenewableUK\u2019s deputy chief executive, Maf Smith, said: \u201cThe UK is right at the forefront of a global race to develop wave power on a commercial scale. It\u2019s vital that we don\u2019t lose our lead to other countries, who stand to benefit from the years of investment and progress we\u2019ve made. The more we deploy, the cheaper the technology will become.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The ETI\u2019s views on marine energy come after a global renewable energy body said developments in energy storage could be a \u201cgame-changer\u201d for clean power. The Abu Dhabi-based Irena <a draggable=\"true\" href=\"http:\/\/www.irena.org\/menu\/index.aspx?mnu=Subcat&amp;PriMenuID=36&amp;CatID=141&amp;SubcatID=3802\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">said battery storage capacity for electricity could increase from 1GW today to 250GW by 2030<\/a>, helping alleviate renewable energy\u2019s intermittent nature.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Wave power devices being tested in Cornwall and at Orkney are 10 times more expensive than other sources of low carbon power and need a radical rethink, the Energy Technologies Institute (ETI) said.
