This column chronicles the most notable design trends in the vehicle electrification realm \u2013 and it inevitably starts with the battery.<\/p>\n<h2>1. It&#8217;s all about battery<\/h2>\n<p>Cost is the key stumbling block in the automotive industry&#8217;s bid to develop cleaner cars, and the battery is mostly responsible for that. Besides pricier batteries, what&#8217;s also required is faster charging technologies for vehicles operating at higher voltages. A recent study from Yole D\u00e9veloppement claims that battery cell technologies are constantly improving while their costs are gradually coming down \u2013 that favors larger-capacity battery packs and longer range drives \u2013 though no big technology breakthrough is in sight, the report clarifies.<\/p>\n<h2>2. Slicker IGBT modules<\/h2>\n<p>Lexus has recently incorporated a double-sided cooling module, and that shows improvements in cooling and thermal management systems for electric and hybrid vehicles. Moreover, IGBT modules are becoming more compact and flexible, which\u00a0in turn\u00a0helps pack more power in available space in the engine compartment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"figures\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/content.cdntwrk.com\/files\/aHViPTYzODY3JmNtZD1pdGVtZWRpdG9yaW1hZ2UmZmlsZW5hbWU9aXRlbWVkaXRvcmltYWdlXzViMDVlNzdjYWJjOGEucG5nJnZlcnNpb249MDAwMCZzaWc9MTJlNjkxMjk3YTg5NDRhNzAzMjg2Y2Q3NjVkM2U3YjU%253D\" alt=\"\" width=\"484\" height=\"264\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"figures\">[Figure 1 | Infineon&#8217;s IGBT module for electric and hybrid vehicles is optimized for cooling.]<\/p>\n<p>Take, for instance, Infineon&#8217;s double-sided cooling module HybridPACK (Figure 1), which the German chipmaker has specially designed for automotive inverters. The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.prnewswire.com\/news-releases\/complete-teardown-of-infineons-ff400r07a01e3-double-side-cooled-igbt-module-2018-physical-analysis-manufacturing-process-price-analysis--cost-analysis-300612192.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-internal=\"false\">FF400R07A01E3<\/a>\u00a0IGBT module uses a molded structure optimized for cooling, and it can drive 700 A while significantly reducing losses in conduction and switching.<\/p>\n<h2>3. Fully electric vs. hybrids<\/h2>\n<p>The common perception among industry watchers is that hybrid vehicles offer the best of both worlds. Hybrid vehicles, also known as plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs), can reduce CO<sub>2<\/sub>\u00a0emissions while keeping the driving ranges long using the internal combustion engines (ICEs), right? A closer look reveals that the market is mainly driven by fully electric vehicles, also termed as battery electric vehicles (BEVs).<\/p>\n<p>BEVs, while offering relatively shorter ranges and costing more due to expensive batteries, still provide greater incentives than PHEVs. For a start, BEVs are zero-emission vehicles. Furthermore, battery cell technologies are continuously improving while their cost is coming down. That will help create larger battery packs, which will enable greater driving ranges.<\/p>\n<h2>4. The biggest market<\/h2>\n<p>What&#8217;s the biggest market for electric vehicles? According to Yole D\u00e9veloppement, China now accounts for nearly 50 percent of global sales.
